The Karuna Meditation Society (KMS) is a pluralistic Buddhist group that draws inspiration from the Theravada teachings of Insight (Vipassana) and Lovingkindness (Metta) meditation, the Zen teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh and Shunryu Suzuki Roshi, as well as the wisdom found in related spiritual, philosophical and scientific traditions of inquiry. KMS was founded in Vancouver, B.C. in 1984.

We seek to support each other in bringing together in our lives the qualities of compassion, joy and wisdom through our meditation practice, through our fostering of meditation and inquiry, and through our involvement in the life of the wider community.

KARUNA ACTIVITIES

We offer 6-week meditation and discussion courses on various topics of Buddhist teaching five times a year which are open to twelve participants. Some previous experience in Buddhist meditation is recommended. There is no cost. There is sometimes a waiting list to attend these sessions.

She has taught Vipassana/Metta meditation (Insight/Lovingkindness) since 1986 and is also a Dharma teacher in the lineage of Vietnamese Zen teacher Thich Nhat Hanh. Her teaching combines the practice of the Brahma Vihara (Sacred Dwelling Place of lovingkindness, compassion, joy and equanimity) and the practice of mindfulness with an emphasis on realizing our interdependence with all of life.
